Äkäskero News

January 2023

Dear all,

from now on all our news will be published on Facebook. You do not need an account at Facebook to see the news. Just follow this link:

December 1st, 2022

Our season started as planned. Today the first groups came back from their tours. The trailconditions are not perfect but no problem to go with the dogs.

October 14th, 2022

Although prices have increased enormously in some cases – up to 50% – we are keeping our prices stable. This is also to thank our supporters who helped us during Corona. We hope that enough guests will come so that we can cover our increased costs. Thank you.

June 22nd, 2022

Information to our guests: we are also under strong pressure due to rising prices. Price increases of 15 – 30 percent hit us hard. We guarantee all guests who book with us until August 31, 2022 the current prices on our homepage even if we later have to increase prices due to inflation.

April 23rd, 2022

Today the last guests are leaving us. A very demanding and intensive season has come to an end. We would like to thank all staff, guests and supporters for helping us during this difficult time.

April 1st, 2022

The last few weeks have been very intense and we are pleased to have welcomed so many guests.

Currently our last panoramic tour is in the mountains with very good conditions. Also our normal tours have very good conditions and lots of snow. The last tour ends on 23 April although we will certainly have snow until mid-May.

February 12th, 2022

Our wildernesstour as seen from our guests. Enjoy and many thanks to Christian:

January 26th, 2022

As of next week, we are practically fully booked. Finally we are allowed to work properly again. Even our restaurant is open normally for our house guests.

For February and March there are only a few places left. April – for many the most beautiful month in Lapland – still has enough places and there should be more than enough snow. Sun and snow as a highlight on our husky tours – welcome.

January 12th, 2022

Even if the government always makes it more difficult for us: all our tours are and have been carried out and our guests get the full program. Only not recommendable at the moment are trips to the tourist centers of Äkäslompolo and Levi.

In addition to our dog sled tours, there are of course snowmobile tours, snowshoeing and skiing tours, walks with our old dogs, etc. Jacuzzi and sauna are waiting for your visit.

December 24th, 2021

Merry Christmas to all our friends, supporters and guests.

As the rules for entering and leaving Finland can change at any time we would like to refer to the following page:

This should be at least the rules applied by the border guard.

We are helpful to all our customers regarding tests etc. for the return journey.

December 16th, 2021

We have received the sad news that Dr. Walter Hugentobler has started his last journey. He was not only the founder of Äkäskero but always a good friend and the soul behind Äkäskero. RIP

November 18th, 2021

Due to an accident we still have a vacancy for a sled dog guide. Experience with sled dogs is an advantage, love for dogs is absolutely necessary.

Applications to benkku@akaskero.com

October 21st, 2021

Winter is here and seems to stay. Today, with 25 cm of snow, the first sled trails were opened. From Monday, all teams should then be trained with sleds.

October 4th, 2021

Almost all the staff for the coming winter are already here. The training of the dogs is in full swing and we hope that you will support us with your bookings.

Thanks to your support we have brought our dogs through the crisis and need now especially many bookings to be able to compensate the losses of the last years – about 600,000 euros.

September 3rd, 2021

For all direct bookers, for any cancellation due to new measures of the countries (Finland or the guest’s country) the legal regulations at the time of booking are decisive. Currently, everyone with sufficient vaccination is allowed to enter the country. Without sufficient vaccination, a negativ COVID test must be presented and then quarantine must be followed with another test on the spot.

This means that if a guest is unable to enter the country due to changes in regulations after booking – if they were allowed to enter at the time of booking – they will be entitled to a free cancellation (processing fee 100 Euros) or credit.

Due to the situation we have also ensured that all our employees receive full vaccination protection.

August 26th, 2021

After a very special summer with temperatures between 2 and 30 degrees, autumn begins next week in our country. So far we have already had several frosty nights. We in Äkäskero are now waiting for the arrival of our guides and future staff. The training of the dogs will start the next days and we hope that the coming winter will bring many guests.

July 20, 2021

From July 27, vaccinated persons or persons with neg. covidtest can enter Finland without any problems. Therefore we are now looking for staff for the next season. Primarily sled dog guide with and without experience.

If you are interested or have any questions, please send a mail to benkku@akaskero.com.

19th of June 2021

Entry to Finland as a tourist allowed from 21st of June

After more than one year guests are allowed to enter Finland again from Monday. Prerequisite is that the 2nd Corona vaccination at least 2 weeks ago. You can find more information under

11th of May 2021

We would like to thank all our supporters and guests. Therefore, our prices for next season will not be increased but remain the same.

Sincere thanks

1st of May 2021

For the upcoming winter season we are now looking for employees. We are looking for employees for the Huskyvillage (kitchen, service, cleaning) as well as for the sled dogs (guide, doghandler). We offer extensive training to all those who have no previous experience. Please send your application directly to benkku@akaskero.com

In addition, we are looking for volunteers who have at least one month to help us with the dog work until winter.

5th of April 2021

The winter season ends as it began: without guests. Due to the various measures of the Finnish government it was not possible for our guests to come. Interestingly, both car testers and sportsmen were allowed to enter without any problems. Accordingly, the companies that benefit from this are doing well.

We thank all our friends and guests who support our dogs through donations and sponsorships. Thanks to you we can feed our dogs until the end of September. Many thanks.

A special thanks goes to Martin Schuler, who was able to raise additional donations with a campaign at Gofundme. Thank you Martin. Also Kontiki-Reisen did a donation campaign. We are also grateful to them.

8th of March 2021

We would like to thank all those who have helped us so far with their donations or sponsorships. Your donations help us to get through this difficult time. Due to travel restrictions, we will not have income until December. This means one and a half years without income in which we need 450 Euro daily just for the dog food. We are grateful for any amount and hope that you can continue to support us. Thank you.

8th of February 2021

The Akaskero calendars 2021-2023 have finally arrived.

You can support our dogs by buying a calendar for Euro 50,– incl. shipping. Since we are now almost a year without income and the next guests will probably come earliest in December, we are urgently dependent on your help. Every day we have feeding costs of about 450 Euro. Please transfer the money to the account of the Sleddogassociation and send us a mail to sleddogassociation@akaskero.com with your address.

Please to all those who have already supported us – both on Gofundme, sponsorship and directly : send us also a mail to sleddogassociation.com with your address so that we can send you the calendar. We cannot see your address on the bank statement. Thanks a lot

28th of January, 2021

We would like to thank our longtime guest and friend Martin Schuler. His commitment and help with the fundraising campaign via Gofundme – see below – shows first results.

We have received a larger amount in the meantime.

Many thanks

19th of January, 2021

We would like to thank all those who have supported us with small or larger amounts. Through your help we now have the money for a good two months of food for the dogs. It helps us a lot, because it seems that we will have no income until next December.

Many thanks

7th of January, 2021

We like to thank our longtime guest and friend Martin Schuler very much. He has started a donation campaign at “gofundme).

Every Penny of this campaing will go without deduction to our dogs.

Thank you

24th of December, 2020

Merry Christmas to all our guests, friends and colleagues.

22nd of December, 2020

First of all we would like to thank everyone who supports us with their donations. At the same time we would like to assure that every cent for dog food and medical measures really benefits the dogs. There are 0 Euro of costs for administration or fees. Thank you.

We would also like to thank all the employees who have been helping us for a long time without salary so that the dogs can survive.

18th of December, 2020

Thank you for the numerous inquiries. Here are the numbers so everyone can estimate our expense for the dogs. The numbers are from the last accounting statement and are annual costs:

Dog food EUR 90.921

Veterinary costs incl. medication EUR 27.208

Currently we have a total of 467 dogs. Of these, 128 are retired dogs, 315 are working dogs and 34 are puppies/young dogs.

17th of December, 2020

Due to articles in the press, we have received several inquiries regarding the “reduction” of sled dogs in Lapland.

Yes, it is true that many sled dogs are currently being killed throughout Scandinavia due to the Corona crisis. Several companies are ending their work, many are “reducing” their dog population.

We would like to state that according to the law in Scandinavia this is absolutely legal. Animals can be killed at any time without justification. They must not be subjected to unnecessary pain or stress in the process.

We in Äkäskero are fighting hard for survival and we guarantee that no dogs will be “reduced” here. Whoever would like to support us can do so under sponsorships via our homepage. Thank you very much.

7th of December, 2020

The Finnish government has decided to continue doing nothing. Thus the old rules for the entry to Finland apply. It is to be feared that new rules will not come into force until the beginning of February. It is interesting that sportsmen and autotesters are allowed to enter without any problems and spread the virus here. It is a shame.

9th of November, 2020

As the finnish government does not seem to have any idea about Lapland here is some information:

November 8th, 2020

The Finnish government is expected to announce the rules for tourist travel next week. According to current information it will be possible to enter from all countries with a negative corona test.

It can also be expected that the flight schedule of Finnair will be changed accordingly and that considerably more flights than previously known will be available.

October 6th, 2020

Entry regulations: according latest inormation from middle of November on it will be possible to enter Finland for holidays up to one week with a negative Coronatest. Precondition is, that the destination complies with further regulations. We correspond to these 100%. It will be difficult for larger winter resorts. Especially restaurants, bars and breakfast buffets are responsible for the spread of corona and you should be careful.

Welcome for your winterholidays in save Äkäskero

September 27, 2020

Important information for our guests

The following rules apply to all direct bookings despite and because of Corona:

All deposits and payments are secured with a bank guarantee (Nordea) according to law. This means that even in case of insolvency, our customers’ funds are protected.

In case of cancellation due to governmental measures (border closures, travel restrictions, etc.) we will pay the customer the total amount minus 100 Euro handling costs back. If a customer falls ill, the conditions of the travel cancellation insurance apply.

19th of September, 2020

The recently published new travel conditions – for entry from a country with more than 25/100,000 infected persons – stipulate that visitors from these countries must present a negative corona test, then come into quarantine for three days and are then tested again. This regulation is to apply from 23 November.

According to the unanimous opinion of experts, this regulation is both illegal and pointless. It can therefore be assumed that the regulation will be amended accordingly.

11th of September 2020

After a long period of inactivity, the Finnish government has now established rules for tourism. From September 19, travelers from the Schengen area will be allowed to enter the country if the infection rate in the country of origin is below 25/100,000. This is currently the case in Germany, for example, but not in Switzerland.

Another very special regulation was also made: tourists from risk countries may enter the country if they do not stay longer than 3 days in Finland. This mainly concerns mass tourism from the UK. Only the Finnish government and its whisperers might know what is the idea about this. It should be clear to everyone that masses “consuming” the programs in a short period of time will probably increase the risk massively.

We will see if there will be any changes.

1st of September 2020

Far away from mass tourism in Rovaniemi, Äkäslompolo or Levi, guests are safely accommodated with us. Due to the division into small groups with max. 7 participants, possibility to eat separately in the Kota, breakfast in the cottage etc. the conditions are safe even under Corona. Additionally we install a filter system against viruses etc. in the Kota. So all conditions for a safe vacation are given.

13th of July 2020

From today it is again possible to travel to Finland for holidays from most european countries. Please check from the embassy if you can travel from your country.

Flights to Kittilä will be possible in August again.

Welcome for your autumn holidays in our cottages in Äkäskero or at our Sleddogcenter.

6th of July 2020

If you would like to take part in our little photo contest and don’t have an Instagram account, feel free to send photos to rezeption@akaskero.com. Then we can upload them ourselves.

Good luck

31st of May, 2020

Everything which does not need an engine is included in the price.

Special offer for our donators and dog sponsors: you get all as above for just Euro 450,–. If you cannot come this season but like to take advantage of this great offer: you can buy a voucher for this price and the same program also next year.

7th of May, 2020

We’d like to thank all our friends, donators and sponsors of our dogs who’ve helped us during this difficult time. As you know, we do not only have to take care of our working dogs but we are also committed to taking care of our more than 160 retired dogs. It is an enormous challenge at this time. Thank you for helping us.

To give you something back we are holding a raffle on the 19th of June. Read more about the raffle, the prizes and how to take part here in our Facebook post.

Important information to all our customers and partners concerning the coronavirus

Due to the development of the crisis we are forced to shut down our sleddogcenter. Travelrestrictions and border closings are in force.

For all our customers canceling the holidays our General Conditions have to be used. At the moment we are not able or allowed to make any decisions outside this and cannot agree anything outside those rules.

Thank you for your understanding

We wish you all the best in this difficult time

16th of March, 2020

Information concerning coronavirus!

As the situation is changing every day – airlines canceling flights, travelrestrictions, borderclosing – we like to inform our customers as follows:

According the law we are strictly bound to follow our General Conditions as shown on our website. This means, that all conditions concerning a cancellation of your journey are strictly handled according the General Conditions. We also like to point out, that insurances normally do not cover costs if you are not sick. Also “force majeure” frees the insurance companies from payment.

It will take a while until the governments will set rules how to handle this economic situation.

As soon as things are clear we will find a customerfriendly solution.

We hope to find your understanding.

13th of March, 2020

Some Finnair flights had been canceled due to little demand as those flight had been connecting flights for flights to China and Asia. Maybe some of your flights will be rerouted.

During the polarnight the sky is full of beautiful colors.

6th of December 2018

Todays start with the group in balmy minus 6. Everybody happy that the snow was nicely coming the last days.

3rd of December 2018

A tough start into the season. No snow in Lapland and all of the team had to work really hard to make a program suitable for our customers – of course with our dogs. Training with ATV and cart, hiking with the dogs, overnight in a tent and finally driving the team with the sled. An incredible work to make all this happening.

Everybody starts to relax as finally the snow is coming and it looks good. The lakes are solid frozen only the rivers will need still some time to be save.

18th of November 2018

Seasonstart without snow?

Lapland – and the whole of Scandinavia – experiences for the first time no or very little snow at this time of the year. Reindeermen are not able to bring their reindeers home, mushers have to train their dogs with ATV and carts, roads and trails are bare or blank ice. Never seen before. We at Äkäskero work hard to prepare a nice program for our customers anyhow, to give them a great experience of Lapland but still hope the weather changes to normal.

We are still working on our new “Kota”-Restaurant but the cottages are ready for our guests. Every cottage has 3 sleepingrooms, spacious livingroom, kitchen and two times shower and WC.

23rd of October 2018

The Muonio river starts to freeze and to form ice sculptures.

19th of October 2018

The training of all our dogs has started. They will be in shape for the season.

7th of October 2018

On Friday winter has knocked on our door for the first time this season. While the kota/restaurant is still under construction, the cabins are almost ready for our customers.

1st of October 2018

You can find us also at Instagram: teamakaskero

29th of September 2018

As the temperatures are quite cold and the morning temperature is below 0 our raceteam is training hard. Over 30 km per run are tough. Marley und Attila in Lead

22nd of September 2018

We enjoy the last autumn days before the leafs will be falling. The reindeers are well nurished for the cold, long winter.

2nd of September 2018

For most people the Indian Summer – in Finnish “Ruska” – is besides winter – the most beautiful time in Lapland.

1st of September 2018

For our raceteam the training already started. The temperatures are quite ok but the dogs are happy to find places to cool themselves down.

23rd of August 2018

Erich, who is helping us at this time, was taking a look at the camp with his drone. At the left side you can see the new cottages and the basement for the “kota”/restaurant. This very hot summer the roofs over the kennels where a great relieve for our dogs.

4th of August 2018

We are still small but we are going to rule the (sledding)world.

2nd of August 2018

The new cottages in our sleddogcenter start to get ready. Also the insidework is progressing nicely.

23rd of July 2018

The last weeks had not only been extremly warm in the southern parts of Scandinavia. Also in Lapland temperatures reached 30 C and more. As there was close to no rain birches start to change the colors due to the lack of water. Good thing: almost no mosquitos.

9th of July 2018

Summer is puppytime in Äkäskero. From “I cannot see the world”, to “the world is just for playing”, to “the world is mine”.

1st of July 2018

The new loghouses in the sleddogcenter are supposed to be ready by beginning of September. At least that is, what Timo our constructor promisses. Keep the fingers crossed.

18th of June 2018

25 years ago, Friday 18th of June the owners of Kontiki-Reisen and their architect came to Lapland to sign the contract for Äkäskero and start the project. The trustee was in a hurry as he wanted to go to his midsummer party and at the same time a bit suspicious as he demanded that the payment has to be done in cash. Not really easy with the amount involved. It was clear, that Finns did not trust foreigners. After signing the contract the real adventure begun which I did not at all expect to involve me a lot. After the weekend I was not only the one responsible for organizing the renovation but was also the one who had to run the business. My place suddenly was behind the bar instead in front of it. Not really easy at a time when mobilphones and internet did not exist. Anyhow: my work started by buying a computer and fax. Instead of working with my dogs I was sitting in the office – a room upstairs in the lodge – and had my daily fights with the workers.

28th May 2018

Today, 25 years ago I moved to Äkäskero. The idea to create a center for sleddogsport seemed to be unrealistic not to say crazy. Outside of normal tourist-areas at a time when wintertourism was almost not existing it seemed to be impossible to run a place like Äkäskero and many have failed before. Together with the suisse travelspecialist Kontiki-Reisen I saw a chance to try it.
